This paper introduces the continuing 'HI-SEAS Habitability Study', which systematically investigates the relationship between the built environment (habitat) and its inhabitants. Research conducted during the missions includes research into food preparation and preferences, behavior, crew dynamics, group performance and other relevant issues for future missions to Mars and beyond, as well as our study on habitability. ![]() HI-SEAS V began on January 19th, 2017 and is scheduled for 8 months. The mission began on 28 August 2015 and was scheduled to run for a year. HI-SEAS mission IV included six crew-members, three male and three female. The 'Hawai'i Space Exploration Analog and Simulation' (HI-SEAS) is a long duration Mars exploration analogue study run by the University of Hawaii at Manoa, funded by NASA. It further explores the necessity of incorporating the discipline of Space Architecture and Habitability into aerospace engineering and architectural curricula. ![]() is paper presents examples of educational practices illustrated with student projects from European and US academic institutions that offer space architecture as a mainstream or major component in their curriculum. Many universities around the world offer aerospace engineering undergraduate and graduate programs, but only a few relate to the field of Space Architecture. In addition to traditional knowledge of planning and building processes, special knowledge is needed regarding how to design for humans in extreme environments and how to do so creatively. It is simultaneously technical, humanistic, and artistic and deals – most importantly - with the design process from a “big picture” perspective down to every detail of each component. ![]() Space Architecture combines the accuracy of technical systems, human needs for working and living, the interface design for the relationship between humans, and the built and natural environments. Space Architecture is interdisciplinary it connects diverse fields such as aerospace engineering, architecture and design, human factors design, space sciences, medicine, psychology, and art.
